Ordinarily, I go to the woods alone, with not a single friend, for they are all smilers and talkers and therefore unsuitable.
I don’t really want to be witnessed talking to the catbirds or hugging the old black oak tree. I have my way of praying, as you no doubt have yours.
Besides, when I am alone I can become invisible. I can sit on the top of a dune as motionless as an uprise of weeds, until the foxes run by unconcerned. I can hear the almost unhearable sound of the roses singing.
If you have ever gone to the woods with me, I must love you very much. — Mary Oliver
Join a Savoring Walk in the woods of Tyler State Park. What is a savoring walk? It’s pretty much as Mary Oliver describes it: rambling about, not chatting much, just being close to all that Nature has to offer, and letting your senses guide you.
On this Savoring Walk, we will begin together in a group for a brief time of centering and a consideration of how we might best use our sensory equipment to walk with appreciation and wonder. I’ll give you some evidence-based tips.
Then you will be free to walk for about a half an hour, alone or with a companion or two if you like. No cell phones, no earphones or music, no specific destination to reach. Just mindful embodiment that will open you up to the goodness that surrounds you.
We’ll gather again to share our savorings and gratitude. The sharing is optional, but "Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it." — William Arthur Ward
This is a donation-based event. Please pre-register. You will receive details and the specific location in the park where we will meet.
