Elements and Anchors for Meditation

  • Unity Barn 4000 Saw Mill Road Doylestown, PA, 18902 United States (map)

On four Wednesdays in October, I will serve as a guest teacher at Unity Barn in Doylestown.

October 5 – Earth and Body

October 12 – Water and Breath

October 19 – Air and Sound

October 26 – Fire and Thoughts/Emotions

In Vipassana (Insight) meditation, we practice with “bare attention,” or simply knowing any object as it arises, moment by moment. This is simple, but it’s not always easy. It represents a radical departure from the way we typically experience our lives. So it helps to have a specific object to focus on, and a way to frame how we bring mindful attention to the act of meditating.

Each week we will practice by anchoring the attention on a specific object, as a way to stabilize present moment awareness. We will also explore an elemental aspect of the object we anchor on. After a time, you may find it easier to open up to “choiceless awareness” with no specific object.

There is a natural progression of steps from each week to the next, but each class is self-contained; you can attend just one of the sittings to build skills and gain benefit. We’ll discover mindful strategies for dealing with discomfort and pain during meditation, learn to accept everything that happens as a support for practice rather than a distraction, and access our innate deep inner peace and well-being.

Class will begin with a brief teaching, followed by about 30 minutes of guided meditation. We’ll end by sharing our experiences, leave time for questions and answers, and enjoy connecting with other sincere seekers.

Please register through the Unity Barn. Space is limited! Advance purchase is recommended: $20 per class or $70 for the four-week series.
