Mindful of Race: A Reading Group

  • Way Opens Wellness online via Zoom (map)

“Racism is a heart disease, and it’s curable.” - Ruth King

Way Opens Wellness is sponsoring a group for people who are interested in reading and working with Ruth King’s book, Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out

Readings and conversations provide direction, and simple mindfulness practices provide support for the work we have to do together. While you may or may not have a mindfulness practice, it is vital to choose slowing down, staying present, and being wise about how we respond to the harm caused by systemic racism and white supremacy. This work is intended to be helpful to the anti-racism work you already do, or hope to do.

Participants are asked to make a sustained commitment to the process. It is not easy or comfortable to unpack our internalized racism, so it is important that the group be consistent, secure, and dedicated.

The group is open to all sincere seekers. When necessary and skillful, there will be times that we work in affinity groups. To maintain connection and intimacy, the number of participants is limited to 14.

Amy Ward Brimmer will serve as host and facilitator for the first few meetings. Then members will be encouraged to take turns serving as conversation facilitators. In this way, we will use a peer support model for learning together.

The group is currently scheduled to meet virtually for 90 minutes every other Sunday. At this first meeting we will decide whether to change or maintain this schedule.
