Going for Refuge: Meditating on the Three Jewels
In Buddhist practice, we talk about “taking refuge” in the triple gem: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Monastics and lay people alike often begin meditation by chanting this intention, which marks their commitment to dharmic practice and submission to the precepts (ethical behavior).
Each week we will practice by taking the refuges and precepts together, then delve deeply into one of the three “gems.” Each class will include a short talk followed by about 30 minutes of guided meditation. We’ll end with a community discussion, questions and answers, and enjoy connecting with other sincere seekers.
Wednesday 10/9 – Buddha
Wednesday 10/16 – Dharma
Wednesday 10/23 – Sangha
Wednesday 10/30 – Sharing the Merits of Practice
Although there is a natural progression from week to week, each class is self-contained; you can attend just one of the sittings to build skills and gain benefit. Along the way, we’ll discover mindful strategies for dealing with discomfort during meditation, learn to accept everything that happens as a support for practice rather than a distraction, and access the power of taking refuge to increase deep inner peace and well-being.
