Sitting, standing, walking, and lying down: We find ourselves in these four postures every day. They are so constant that we don’t notice how we do them, or even what they feel like. Bringing present moment awareness to our everyday movements wakes us up. We begin to notice the mental stream of thoughts that keeps us entranced. and can renew an acquaintance with our bodies and the richness of sensory experience.
This experiential workshop will use applied Alexander Technique and mindfulness-in-motion to explore what it is to move and live in our bodies – no matter what challenges they may bring – with ease, balance, and clarity. This process does not correct for Right and Wrong ways of moving but instead emphasizes freedom from stuck patterns and stale reactions. We’ll investigate what might be getting in the way of flow, steadiness, and pleasure when we move.
We will:
· Practice sitting, standing, walking, and lying down – all of which contain movement patterns worth examining;
· Gain a little bit of knowledge about anatomy, by learning to move in cooperation with your body’s design;
· Recognize what beliefs and attitudes you hold about your body, and how they may be limiting free movement;
· Discover the power of pausing and sensing before taking action;
· Feel lighter, open, and more awake as a result.
You can learn to cultivate a more mindful life by simply showing up for these four basic shapes you routinely make. This workshop will teach you what “showing up for yourself” is like, and provide ways to practice every day.
No prior experience needed; open to everyone.
