Open Your Radiant Heart
Which feels better: ill will or kindness? fear or caring? envy or joy? overwhelm or balance?
What would your life look like if everyone was more loving?
In this 4-week meditation course we will explore four positive emotions or mind states that give us a framework to cultivate care and minimize harm. In Buddhism they are known as the brahmaviharas, or the “four immeasurables,” because they extend goodwill toward all beings, without exception or limit.
In essence, these are four kinds of love, based on capacities that all human beings possess. Yes, even you.
“Ultimately, the reason why love and compassion bring the greatest happiness is simply that our nature cherishes them above all else. The need for love lies at the very foundation of human existence. It results from the profound interdependence we all share with one another. — his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama”
What if learning to love yourself and others was simple, enjoyable, and possible?
Through meditation and discussion, we will explore one type of love each week:
Week 1 - Kindness (metta)
Week 2 - Compassion (karuna)
Week 3 - Sympathetic Joy (mudita)
Week 4 - Equanimity (upekkha)
Guided meditation will be our primary vehicle for learning, as we awaken our capacity to be caring and take calm, compassionate action.
You will get:
Audio recordings of the four brahmavihara meditations for home practice
Supplemental texts and links for further study
The benefit of group investigation and shared learning
A more open, sensitive heart and a calmer mind
