Which feels better: ill will or kindness? fear or caring? envy or joy? overwhelm or balance?
What if learning to love yourself and others was simple, enjoyable, and possible?
In this 4-week meditation course we will explore the brahma viharas, the four prized emotions or mind states that give us a framework to cultivate positive behaviors and minimize harmful ones. In Buddhist tradition they are called the “divine abodes” because they are the mind states in which all enlightened ones reside. They are also known as the “four immeasurables” or “four limitless ones” because they represent goodwill toward all beings, without exception or limit.
In essence, these are four types of love, based on capacities that all humans possess.
As his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama explains:, “Ultimately, the reason why love and compassion bring the greatest happiness is simply that our nature cherishes them above all else. The need for love lies at the very foundation of human existence. It results from the profound interdependence we all share with one another.”
Through meditation and discussion, we will explore one type of love each week:
Week 1 - Kindness (metta)
Week 2 - Compassion (karuna)
Week 3 - Sympathetic Joy (mudita)
Week 4 - Equanimity (upekkha)
Conscious embodied meditation will be our primary vehicle for learning, as we discover and deepen our capacity to manifest these states.
You will get:
· Audio recordings of the four brahmavihara meditations for home practice
· The benefit of group investigation and learning (hint: the teacher’s not the only expert!)
· A more open, sensitive heart and a calmer mind
You can take a single class, or register for the full course.
Single class - $20 | 4-week course - $75
